Doing things for yourself can be a fun and inexpensive alternative to consulting a professional. However, most people would probably say that do-it-yourself estate planning is not especially fun, even if they are saving money. But in the end, DIY estate planning could actually cost your family a great deal.
Sometimes marketers decide to try to reinvent the wheel. They take something that generally requires professional guidance and try to spin it as a simple endeavor that anyone can tackle. This comes into play with the websites that offer do-it-yourself last wills and living trusts.
In 2012, Consumer Reports magazine decided to examine the effectiveness of do-it-yourself estate planning. They had staff members create last wills using products offered by three different purveyors of online legal documents.
The magazine then had a trio of different law school professors scour these documents. The legal educators found a number of different shortcomings. In the end, Consumer Reports advised readers to take pause before buying into any DIY estate planning notions.
