Estate Planning and Secrets

One of the tricky things about estate planning are items which are in many people’s lives that they do not want other people to know about even after they pass away. These things do not have to be anything major. They can be slightly embarrassing, or perceived to be as such. For example, a middle-aged man might fear designating someone to clean out his computer’s hard drive because it might be discovered that the man kept a collection of Justin Beiber’s music in his regular play list.
As minor and petty as worrying about these types of things might sound to some people, there are people who do worry and it sometimes even keeps them from properly planning their estates. Of course, that is not a solution to the problem because property still needs to be disposed of whether or not a person has an estate plan.
If you lived in Japan, you could have your embarrassing secrets whisked away by a company called Keepers. Upon clients’ deaths, this company quickly cleans out their homes to remove anything that might intentionally embarrass the deceased. As of this writing a similar service is not available in the United States.
However, there are things that you can do to dispose of embarrassing secrets short of hiring a company to handle things. Ask an estate planning attorney about your options. Whatever you do, do not let anything embarrassing stop you from getting an estate plan.
